**Barack Obama Backs Kamala Harris and Honors Joe Biden at the Democratic Convention in Chicago**
In a rallying cry for the Democratic Party, former President Barack Obama, alongside former First Lady Michelle Obama, took the stage at the Democratic convention in Chicago, urging Democrats across the country to engage in the 2024 presidential race. The event was charged with a sense of urgency and passion as the Obamas delivered stirring speeches in support of the party’s candidates, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
Barack Obama used the platform to honour his former vice president and now-President Joe Biden, applauding him for his leadership and for passing the torch to the next generation. "It's been the honour of my life to serve you as your president," Biden had earlier remarked, "But I love my country more." Obama praised Biden's empathy, decency, and resilience, calling him an "outstanding president who defended democracy at a moment of great danger. "
The former president's speech also delivered sharp criticism towards former President Donald Trump, the Republican frontrunner for 2024. Obama likened Trump’s re-election campaign to a stale act filled with "childish nicknames, crazy conspiracy theories, and an obsession with crowd sizes." Calling for a new chapter, Obama said, "We do not need four more years of bluster, bumbling, and chaos… America’s ready for a better story."
Michelle Obama continued the attack, particularly focusing on Trump’s rhetoric and policies. She recalled Trump’s infamous claim that immigrants were taking Black jobs, responding with a sharp retort: “Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those ‘Black jobs?’” She criticized Trump for his divisive and racist politics, stating that his leadership is rooted in “misogynistic, racist lies” rather than solutions to improve American lives.
In a rallying moment, Michelle Obama led the crowd in chants of "do something!" She reminded them that the path to victory in 2024 would be a marathon, not a sprint. “If we see a bad poll, and we will, we’ve got to put down that phone and do something!”
The convention also featured impassioned speeches from other Democratic figures. Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff charmed the crowd with a humorous and heartwarming recounting of his relationship with Kamala Harris. At the same time, Sen. Tammy Duckworth highlighted her struggle with infertility and aimed Trump’s “anti-woman crusade.”
In a rare show of bipartisan criticism, Mesa Mayor John Giles, a Republican, condemned the current state of his party. “John McCain’s Republican Party is gone, and we don’t owe a damn thing to what’s been left behind,” Giles said, lending his support to Harris and Walz.
Billionaire Illinois Governor JB Pritzker took his shots at Trump, stating, "Donald Trump is rich in only one thing: stupidity." He lauded Harris for cleaning up the mess left behind by the previous administration.
Senator Bernie Sanders, in a nod to the progressive wing of the party, praised the Biden administration’s achievements but emphasized the need for further reform. He expressed confidence in Harris and Walz to lead that charge if elected in 2024.
The evening they culminated in a live broadcast from Wisconsin, where Harris and Walz expressed their gratitude for the nomination and vowed to forge a new path for America.
As Election Day looms less than 80 days away, the Democratic convention in Chicago served as a powerful show of unity and determination, with the Obamas at the forefront, urging Americans to believe in a brighter future and to fight for the America they want to see.
